What type of EVSE should you install in a parking garage?

These chargers operate on 208/240V electricity, making them the most convenient and cost-effective option for installation, particularly if your garage already possesses the necessary infrastructure. Furthermore, the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles which cannot utilize DCFCs, can fully benefit from L2 chargers. Another option for commercial EV charging are Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFCs). Operating on 480V DC power and delivering 30-360 kW to battery electric vehicles, DC fast chargers are particularly suitable for parking facilities situated near highways, catering to fleet and long-distance travelers. Although DCFC can charge an EV in less than an hour, it’s important to consider that they entail higher installation costs compared to L2 chargers and may necessitate additional permitting.

EVSE incentives and funding opportunities 

While the initial investment for EVSE installation can indeed be significant, there exist numerous funding opportunities available for parking companies, at both the federal and state levels.  

One of the primary avenues for funding EV charging installation is through the federal government’s Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. Managed by the Internal Revenue Service, this tax credit amounts to 6% of the EV station installation costs, with a maximum cap of $100,000 per station. Businesses meeting additional criteria related to wages and apprenticeships may qualify for up to 30% per station. It’s important to note that this tax credit is limited to businesses situated in designated census tracks. 

However, this is just one among several federal funding programs accessible for EV charger installation. Public parking facilities located near highway corridors may also be eligible for grants through the NEVI grant for DC fast chargers.

Comparison between the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit and the NEVI Program. For the tax credit, businesses can receive 6% tax credit up to $100,000 per station, but must be located in specific census tracts; businesses can receive bonus credit for meeting wage and apprenticeship requirements. For the NEVI Program, businesses can receive 4 DC fast chargers at $0, but they must be located within 1 mile of a designated highway.
